Greyhawk, Posters

The Greyhawk Wars

I’m going to be doing a few of these Greyhawk propaganda posters again because I enjoy the hell out of them. Today’s is one that I’ve been kicking around in my head for the last year or so.

The Greyhawk Wars are kind of this big, controversial event in the setting where the whole world shifted in a darker, grimmer direction than it had previously. For many it felt forced and like a direct slap in the face to Gary Gygax.

It may have been.

But I still find it fascinating and at some point I would like to really dig deeply into the lore of the event and its outcome. Some day I will too.

  1. Go for it! I never understood the hate for Greyhawk Wars. The execution of the product was ass sure, it’s barely a boardgame, and less than a sourcebook. But Gygax, an OG wargamer, was TOTALLY setting up this war. He may have preferred a series of smaller regional wars, not some modern day “world war”, but nonetheless that was the direction of the timeline from Folio to Boxed Set to Dragon Magazine. Again, Gygax’s writings on troop strengths suggested he wanted battle scale rules ala Chainmail or Battlesystem, not broad continental war, but that style of D&D play was out (imagine if he had teamed up with Warhammer). Love it or hate it, when ppl ask me what makes Greyhawk distinctive from other settings I always bring up it has the best wars.
